  • the standard

The ear horn, squire. Now pass it posthaste,
Mind the maps I’ve left on the floor
I’ve a mind to inculcate you, son,
Of these old lands that stir no more.

In Van Diemens Land I met a man
    A pygmy of questioning taste
A fine strapping chap, but when I slept
He’d ground my poor major to paste.

To high heaven he smelled, my old friend
As the pygmy seasoned his shank
The major concern that eats me still
Is the disregard for his rank.

And in Peking I ducked some volleys
    In Opium War number two
    While bedding a charming concubine
Whose fragrance was famous, ‘tis true.

Each night I’d lay down and drink her in
Bouquet of delight at my nose
On her lips: tulips. Her neck: lily.
And betwixt her thighs was a rose

One day came that I returned early
For we’d won an uneasy truce
    I discovered her ol’ factory:
Milking the glands of a mongoose.

But oh, the boys of Upper Volta
Who are tattooed from heel to brow
Have thrilling games of target practice
    From experience, I avow

In a wide circle, with their quick hands
They work themselves to a sizzle
And aim for a mark pre-agreed on
Some burst, some sputter, some drizzle.

This target here inked on my old chest…
Oh don’t run off, squire, I’m not done!
There is still the tale of Siam!
And Madras and Bytown, what fun!

    These callow post-colonial youths,
Will never know what it can mean
To travel afield, to see danger
To lie back and think of the Queen.

  • "The Quarterlife Crisis remains largely a middle-class, Stuff White People Like kind of problem, and usually manifests itself where certain problematic social norms used to exist, like who had access to education and interesting work, and who was allowed adventure and self-determination."
